Let’s get into it.

The Promise of DAOs, the Latest Craze in Crypto. DAOs are in the New Yorker! Kyle Chayka explores the excitement, uncertainty, and limitations of DAOs, citing projects from FWB to CabinDAO to ConstitutionDAO and more. The focus on purchases and limited access doesn’t do the creativity in the space nearly enough justice, but hopefully this can bring more folks into the world of DAOs in 2022. 2022 SPOTLIGHT 🔦

Our Decentralized Selves: Creating in a Post-Identity Future. This incredible piece from TheElWord and @Rafathebuilder explores the intricate nature of identity in web3 and beyond. Featuring conversations with well-known pseudonymous and "doxxed" DAO contributors, the duo argues that by collecting experiences and items attached to our wallets, we will "have a diversity of interconnected masks that can be relied on — even trusted." How those masks are used, or whether they’re always for the best, is dependent on their impact on not just others, but also ourselves. INTERESTING READ 🔥

DAO Challenges Report by Tally. DAOs are hard. A recent Tally report highlights many of the common and important challenges that DAOs face today, including tooling, the incentive problem, lack of clear purpose or KPIs, and much more. The report pulls from both survey data and Twitter research on particular issues. Highly recommend it if you want a brief rundown of the problems DAOs face today. HOT REPORT 🔬

Soulbound by Vitalik Buterin. Drawing inspiration from World of Warcraft, Vitalik asks what if NFTs and governance reputation could be "soulbound." That is, what if some of the things we collect in our wallets on a day-to-day basis couldn’t be transferred and were permanently tied to our identities? This solves (and creates) major problems in reputation tracking and DAO governance, but privacy becomes an issue in this world, as Vitalik explains. Yet another thoughtful post from the man himself. PERMANENT VALUE CREATION 🔮

Web3 Investment Clubs by Syndicate. Syndicate has launched its first self-serve product, web3 Investment Clubs. Investment Clubs enable any group of people to co-invest in both on- and off-chain assets, simplifying legal setup, deposits, cap table management, and distributions. The team launched with a core group of beta users already using the product, including Forefront! COLLECTIVE SENSE MAKING 🚀

Who will own the creator economy? A web2 vs. web3 showdown. This piece by Justine Moore of Venture Twins explains the web2 vs. web3 dynamics in the creator economy. Today, many creator platforms have "caught up" by paying creators out of revenue generated on their site. However, web3 opens the door to more direct audience relationships and ownership of revenue streams for creators. While Justine highlights the lack of discovery, aggregation, and easy UX on many web3 creator platforms, the benefits of ownership and transparency are hard to ignore. FANTASTIC DIVE ⚡️

DAOs Primed to Play Key Role in Artist-Fan Relationship. Another mainstream piece on DAOs, this time from Variety. Featuring Jess from Seed Club and Ian from Syndicate, the piece explores the ways that DAOs enable groups of people to collectively invest, and the opportunity for a much closer artist-fan relationship. A great quote: "We are witnessing captivating experiments, and while they may not be the ultimate solution, they will certainly inspire us and feed our collective understanding." COLLECTIVE VIBES ✨

The Best Argument Against Crypto. This week, the Bankless team plays devil’s advocate, trying to make the best argument against crypto. The answer? Users are used to the simplicity that centralization provides, and don’t actually care about decentralization (in the short-term). If decentralization means self-governance, users need to actually want to govern themselves. As Ryan says: "It’s going to get a lot tougher before it gets better and plenty of user education is needed." VALUES ALIGNMENT 📐

This NFT on OpenSea Will Steal Your IP Address. Today, NFTs rarely do anything (some argue they don't have to). However, this new NFT automatically collects the IP address of any viewer, highlighting some major potential privacy and security concerns for users. The description of the NFT reads: "I just right click + saved your IP address," funny (and slightly spooky) stuff. SPICY & PROVOCATIVE 👀
